About Phil
I'm a data analyst and the creator of this site, where I analyse and present UK salary, employment and tax data in a way that's easier to understand and use.
The site was created to answer the kinds of salary questions I've had myself — from what a salary actually looks like after tax to how pay compares across different roles, locations and levels of experience.
I work with data and information from authoritative sources, including HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS), and turn it into straightforward tools, calculations and guides for everyday use.
My background is in digital marketing, and I've also previously worked freelance and supported small businesses with finance and administrative work, including payroll and right-to-work checks. Having experienced both self-employment and salaried employment, I've seen first-hand how important it is to understand what your income actually means in practice.
My aim with this site is simple: to make reliable UK salary and employment data more accessible, without requiring a background in finance, statistics or payroll to understand it.
Sources I work with
- HMRC Income Tax rates and allowances
- HMRC National Insurance rates
- Student loan repayment thresholds (GOV.UK)
- ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE)
How every figure is calculated is documented on our methodology page, and how articles are written and reviewed is set out in our editorial policy.
